Seriously cool entrance. The narrow alleyway leading to the patio and down the stairs to the host station feels like something out of an NYC rom-com movie. Pretty small place so I'd recommend getting reservations if you're going on a Friday or Saturday. We were only two so we only had to wait 30 minutes or so. I'd say the only downside is that they don't have a bar you can hang out at while you are waiting, but you can still get a drink while you are standing there. Speaking of drinks, the patron margarita is delicious (and strong!). The decor is very relaxing and is just authentic enough, but not overdone. It feels like a Mexican place without being in-your-face Mexican, if you get my meaning. As for the food, I got the enchiladas poblanas. I ate all of it if that tells you anything. Entrees are a tad pricey for Mexican, but this is authentic Mexican and not tex-mex, so I didn't mind so much. All-in-all a great place to get some real Mexican food.

Its really nice to sit outside and eat during the summer (inside is kind of dark). Their Enchiladas verdes are really good, as well as their refried beans (even though they look pretty runny), and their salsa. I didn't like their chips that much because they were too thick. Go try their Sangria, its refreshing and fruity. I also like their Tres Leches cake, which comes with ice cream. Their busiest hours are probably from 7-9, and the restaurant isn't too big, so get there early. Their food comes out pretty fast so once you are seated, you can order, get your meal and eat in less than an hour.

Visited after a number of years. It was nice to see that they have a vegetarian section in their menu that includes their wonderful cactus enchiladas with green sauce. We traditionally ordered them but they were not on the official menu. Their rice and refried black beans are delicious.

Everything you need to know about this place is embodied in the following fact: your meal (we were a party of 4 and ordered different things) is served within minutes of ordering. This means nothing is cooked to order. I envision a kitchen with big pots of what you see in all of the pictures, 1 pot of refried beans, 1 pot of rice, 1 pot of pickled onions, 1 pot of soft tacos, 1 pot of enchiladas. 1 big tub of watered down margarita, and 1 tub of watered down sangria. As a result of pre-cooking everything on the menu and letting it sit for hours, and then microwaving it before serving results in food with no discernible taste to anything we ordered. Worse, we were charged for chips we didn't order, i.e., they were placed on our table as a complimentary offering along with salsa. I've noticed this elsewhere. You would do better, and save money, (prices here are way out of whack with the quality of the food) by preparing frozen mexican food at home.

Don't go unless you just want to sit outside and order beer. I got sick eating there yesterday. Margarita is premixed not fresh , avocado guacamole is just avocado with no season or flavor not even a little lime in it, salsa is only tasty thing. Had the tamale and it was drowning in bland non description tomatoes sauce. I've been there about six times over the past 4 years and it always sucks I don't know why I keep going

As regulars for over 30 years, starting in Brookline and continuing to Newton Centre, we've been huge fans, bringing friends and family here. Tonight was the first night we've ever walked out, before being served. It was a balmy and warm summer evening, the patio was relatively empty which was good news. We waited, and waited, and waited. We did get some chips and salsa, but the waiter(s) avoided eye contact. Count down: 5 min, 10 min, 12 min. No server, no eye contact, no "welcome I'll be back with you n 2 minutes". We had scoped out what we wanted (chicken tamale appetizer, carne asada and camarones a la cilantro, sangria). The nice host/manager that we've known for years twiddled with the flowers in pots, hung out with the bored bus boys. No one paid any attention nor come to take even a drink order. Such a sad outing. We politely got up and left, explaining to the surprised host that no one had come to our table since we were seated.

I'm angry. Went to Cafe Sol Azteca for drinks and appetizers. Was seated immediately outdoors - off to a good start. Chips and salsa brought to the table right away...good! We started on the chips and our server came over to take our drink order. We mentioned that we were just ordering appetizers and having cocktails and he told us that he would have to charge us $6.00 for the chips that we just ate because they are only included if you order an entree. Peeved me right off. We had one drink, some incredibly mediocre and overpriced appetizers and could not wait to get out of there. Cafe...you let me down. I tell the world of your chip injustice here on Yelp in hopes that you change your policies.

I have been coming to Sol Azteca since I was a little girl - almost 20 years now. We have always enjoyed the high quality food, the very excellent service, and the great drinks - the Cadillac Margarita is a must try! Sol Azteca is awesome because it's hidden from the Piccadilly Square main drag in Newton Center, and is very intimate and cozy. Surprisingly, the welcome atmosphere makes it great for dates and families with (well behaved) children alike. I almost always order the enchiladas verdes, but the ensalada con nopales is phenomenal if you're looking for a light starter salad.

Overall, this place was good. Service was fine and entrees came out fairly quickly. The enchiladas Rojas were flavorful. The hubs got chicken enchiladas and those were good to. We started out with the chorizo quesadillas. Those were excellent. We didn't get charged for chips and salsa, like others mentioned. But they didn't refill the salsa once we finished. It is hard to find this place. I'm glad I wasn't alone to find it. Overall good food and good service.

This place is very popular and there is a reason. My wife and I came here on a date and now we bring our kids here and they love it. Their ages are 6, 10 and 11. I would say that if you are looking for a place where you can hang out at the bar, pass, there isn't a bar. If you are looking for a place to take young kids, you'd better check out the menu first. This is a small place that isn't going to suite everyone. That said, my kids love the Queso Asado and Guacamole with chips and salsa for the first course. I'm partial to the Camarones (shrimp) in either the cilantro or ajillo sauce. The Mole Poblano is the real thing. Their margaritas are the best I've found anywhere, we don't like them overly sweet and we stick to the traditional. Owner operated, they have a low turnover of friendly intelligent staff and because they are popular - plan on getting there before prime dinning or just after, especially if you were in hope of lingering. In warm weather the best tables are outside in the very pleasant alley court yard. If you want hot and spicy they have dishes with the word diablo in the description that'll test you and they also have many dishes for those who perfer mild. Excellent deserts like flan and chocolate mousse shouldn't be missed. While they make great tacos and enchiladas, the traditional entrees are the best.

You have better options than this place for good Mexican food. Very over priced for bland tasting dishes that came in small portions. Not very many options to choose from. Would definitely review the menu before coming here to make sure it suits you. I would not return or recommend. The drinks and the service were the only bright spots. See recent negative reviews, there's a reason for them.

We walk by this place regularly on our way to Union St, and my wife has always wanted to try it so.... we ordered delivery tonight. Worst. Restaurant. Ever. The food was late, it was cold, it was tipped on one end and it seemed half of it was eaten on the ride over. If it wasn't, then they charge way too much for the amount of food you get. Did I mention that it was expensive?

Sitting outside on a summer's evening is lovely. Even if it is in a back alley in Newton Center. The food was very good for the adults. Especially the shrimp special. Virgin daiquiri was also a winner. Nice spritz of lime in there. What stops me from giving it a 5 is the kids menu. The kids got burritos that had to be eaten with a fork and knife. Not too kid friendly. But otherwise, I recommend.

The food at Sol Azteca is mediocre and bland. No choice of beans. You just get soupy refried beans which taste like cardboard. Even the hot sauce that I had to request was flavorless. The margaritas were too sweet, but did have decent alcohol content. Not enough to make us miss how dull the food was. Service sucked. Oh, and they only provide one complimentary basket of chips and salsa (even though there were 5 of us). After that you pay $6 for each basket. Are you kidding me, Sol Azteca?? The only nice thing was the patio seating -- very pleasant on a pretty night. Not enough to get us to go back, though. There are dozens of good Mexican restaurants to choose from in the Boston area!

The 3 stars is really for the outdoor seating in the summer and the Don Julio margaritas. The outdoor seating is awesome in the summer. It is in a back alley so not near traffic and its nice and cool even on hotter days. The drinks are also really good. Food is only okay. It's hit or miss (even their chips). I've had most of their vegetarian options (last page of menu) and its sometimes great, sometimes not. Food takes forever to come out---service is also hit or miss. They only take reservations for parties of 20 or more and the one time we did that we had to wait 1.5 hours so that reservation didn't seem to work. Overall, go in the summer when you really want to sit outside for awhile since your food may not be there for awhile. Also chips and salsa come with dinner entrees but are not free if you do not order an entree.

Not sure if the food or the service was worse. I ordered vegetarian tostados which are around $17, much pricier than other Mexican places in Boston but because of the price I assumed the quality should be great. However, it was a mediocre meal and was it was a bit cold. The menu says it is topped with avocado and tomatoes but when it was presented to me there was one TINY slice of avocado and two even smaller slices of tomato (about as big as quarters). The waiter was nice but never came to check on us AT ALL and I even had to go up to the kitchen doors to ask for more water and salsa. If I am going to pay for an overpriced meal it would at least be nice if the service was good, but this was not the case at all. Very disappointing.

Horrid experience EVER that made me even sign up for a yelp account. We went in last night for a late dinner at their patio. An old guy who was the maitre d' told me there was no table available when a small group of people were about to leave their table. We pointed that out and he said he'll seat us in a minute. Another couple arrived after us, asked for a table for two, and HE GAVE THAT TABLE TO THEM right in front our face!?!?! He ignored us for a while until we complained, 'uh, what was that? We were here before them.' His answer: 'Oh, I don't remember.' All I can think of was that we were somehow profiled for some reason we just cannot think of. We are Asian & European professionals in our mid-30s living in Newton Center, but I guess he thought we weren't good enough for their extremely overpriced mediocre Mexican food. Or that maitre d' was unfortunately suffering from memory loss. We left the place immediately and went over to Sycamore and had an amazing dinner (as always). That's it with Cafe Sol Azteca.

I love this restaurant!! My parents have been going since before I was born so I have been eating the amazing enchiladas verses since before I could talk! Love Sol Azteca. Also recommend the carnitas and the house salad which has delicious cactus on it!

I have been coming here for 20+ years and this has always been my favorite place for traditional Mexican. Serving sizes are great. Prices are reasonable. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Seating outside is awesome in the summer. I have never head a dish I didn't love. Sangria is awesome too. My only complaint is the wait can be long, so plan your visit accordingly.

I normally don't review after only one visit, but I read the reviews and made an exception. Looking at what others have written - I see that my experience seems to be the rule, not the exception. Everything about Cafe Sol Azteca is just.. meh. The service was on the slow side and the food was pretty bland. Also, I understand that Newton Centre is pretty fancy-pants but it is expensive considering the portions. I WILL say that the outdoor space is beautiful and perfect for warmer weather. To be honest, I didn't even go inside so I can't comment on the decor. I think that this place is more to hang out on the patio, and get drinks. I'd say there are better (and cheaper!) places to eat.

Soz Azteca is my go to place when I'm craving cheese and refried beans. The food is delicious! This particular location has a great patio area that is perfect for some al fresco dining on a lovely night. My only complaint is the service. I never seem to get a server that is friendly and patient. There have been times when he walked away from the table before the whole party ordered. They tend to bump into chairs and people's arms quite often. Its impossible to even ask a question about the menu or make a special request. Fortunately the food, drink and atmosphere make up for the crappy service.

During the summer time, their outdoor space is the way to go. It's nice to be able to have a meal outside. That is the highlight of this place. Having grown up in Texas, I'm picky about Mexican food. I found their food to be good tasting and satisfying. It is the sort of place we'll be certain to head to again when it's time for a simple and nice bite out on a weeknight.

Oof. You guys, this place is so bad. I grew up in Newton, and I have to say, if I had known how sub-par and overpriced all the local restaurants were, I would have wasted less energy trying to get my parents to take me out to dinner. Deceptively cute decor. Decent yet slightly syrupy margaritas. Stale chips. The guacamole was an unceremonious dump on a sad piece of romaine lettuce, and the queso was a joke. Even mediocre Tostitos queso (bless its heart) is at least the right consistency - this queso was a tasteless, melted gum eraser sitting under a pool of oil. Even my post-baby-birth friend who was desperate to get out of the house and would have eaten pencil shavings as long as they were accompanied by adult conversation noticed how bad it was when hot, and how it congealed into a gummy cheese pancake as it cooled. AND WE ATE IT ANYWAY. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU DO WITH QUESO. Damn you, Cafe Sol Azteca, for exploiting human weakness! The entrees were blah, with dried out rice, a little warm quicksand pool of refried beans, and some actually rather delightful vinegary cabbage slaw. PAINFULLY slow service, during all the worst times (waiting for drink order; waiting for the check to get picked up). The grand total for this disappointment? With tip, because we're not assholes? $50 each. Even for $30 I'd consider coming back, but these prices are just blatantly gouging Newton millionaires, and as a former resident of this fair city, I'm insulted at the insinuation that rich white Jews have no tastebuds.

How is this place still in business? OK, I am from Texas, so I have high expectations when it comes to Mexican food. But having lived in Boston since 1995, I know there has to be leeway here. I wouldn't expect great chowder in Dallas! But this place is so mediocre, I do not know how they have been around so long and have a Zagat recommended sticker on their door. We used a Living Social deal on a Wed night. Maybe 3 other tables there. Chips & salsa are HOLD UP - $9??!! AND $6 for REFILLS? Are you folks whacked over there?? (But free with a dinner entree!) I have had better corn chips from Trader Joes. Even my 9 year old said that. Small basket of chips, cold, blah salsa. Had a sweet/sour pork app none of us could eat after one bite. Boring chicken tostada, chicken tasted like it had been boiled no seasonings then placed onto tostada with the beans, lettuce, etc. And pickled red cabbage as a side? What? Unappetizing! The guac was flavorless. Again, my whole family said, mom, they need your guac recipe, this tastes like plain avocados. The sides of rice & beans were lukewarm. Why? They were not slammed, not busy at all. Other entree was a fajita like soft taco. It was just OK. Surprised at how much some of the entrees cost. My daughter said mom, one of the menu items is $54! I hope it tastes good, at that price. The staff was perfectly nice, decor is nice, I am sure the patio on a summer night is pleasant. We did not drink. To sum it up...a chain like Margaritas is a better bet. Sadly.

I went here on a Monday night for their open mic. It was tricky to find partly due to terrible directions from Google Maps, and the other part due to the fact that this place is a little hole in the wall place, however, it was great! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was nice. I got the Tostadas and would probably get that again. The food was authentic and fresh...but consider yourself warned, it is a little pricey. Bonus Tip: At the time if you checked in on Yelp you got a $10 off coupon, so be sure to check in! All in all, the open mic was great and I will definitely return in the future...oh yea, and get the sangria, it was yummy!

Drinks are delectable (margaritas with great choices of tequila), the patio is beautiful (whimsical, light and colorful) but the food and service is sub-par which brings it down a notch. The entrees are large but can lack in flavor and creativity. The enchiladas can be overpowering with the cheese. However, their guacamole is very good, it's saving grace. The few times I have been here the service is spotty. The place is hard to find so keep eye out in the very busy newton centre.

I live in Newton Centre and I have children, so I have tried this place ~8 times. My kids enjoy eating on the outdoor patio, which is located in a back alley next to a Japanese place and the Union Street restaraunt. The patio has a fun atmosphere on warm nights and the sangria is above average. The food is average for a Mexican restaraunt. Not good. Not terrible. After trying over a dozen dishes, I can't say that I would recommend any to a friend. The chips and salsa are complimentary, and the salsa is always fresh and delicious. The positives end there. The service is consistently below average. On a recent visit, the waitress gave me a warm beer. I mentioned this to her in a polite manner and she grabbed the beer bottle off the table and returned 10 minutes later. She didn't say a single word to us. She SLAMMED a new bottle of cold beer right in front of me and splashed me with the beer before stomping away.... again without saying a single word. Her name was Gisele on the dinner receipt (she didn't introduce herself by saying her name, so I'm not 100% sure that her name was Gisele). When she stopped by to leave the check I said to her, "Did I say something wrong or make you angry about the warm beer." She replied, "No, I'm just busy tonight." No apology for spraying me with beer. No kind words. She had a pretty thick accent, so perhaps it is a cultural thing. I am not a confrontational person, so I didn't complain to the manager. You may wonder why I have tried this place so many times, despite the mediocre food and poor service.... the proximity to my home, the sangria/beer, chips/salsa, and the atmosphere on the patio are the reason. However, I will never return again!

We seemed to catch staff by surprise since we waited a while to order drinks and they forgot we needed silverware and napkins........... but the sangria (when it finally came) was so fruity and delish! We had the carnitas appetizer and azteca combination plate with amazing array of treats: shrimp, chicken, chorizo! Food is to die for but a little pricey for Mexican food.

Had a fantastic dinner here on a busy Tuesday night. Cannot wait to go back! Tamales were delicious. The enchilada with green tomatillo sauce and mole poblano were so flavorful! The service (the friendly smiling host and our efficient helpful waiter) could not have been any better. Our dessert was fantastic as well. The lighting is warm and welcoming. Been there a few times. Seating is a bit compressed, but has an intimate feel and acoustics are good enough so even with a pile of rug rats at an adjacent table, you can talk with friends. Waiters have always been very nice and they don't cheat you with the alcohol in the Margaritas. I had the steak fajita. At some places, they pile on the rice and other filler, but this was meaty and vegetably (is that a word?). Anyway, very tasty. Service was as fast as I wanted it to be but they didn't seem in a rush to get rid of us even on a busy saturday night.

I heard great things about this restaurant, but sadly i have no desire on ever going back to this place. As a party of two on a friday night we decided to go ahead and do the call ahead seating as suggested for 8 pm, we arrived at 745 pm and was then put on a waiting list, did i mention the end of the waiting list. The host looked very scattered and frazzled by the number of people waiting to be seated. We finally got seated inside, when we asked for outdoor, but at that point we were starving and just wanted to sit. Got inside and was sat at the very back in a corner, where food trays were kept so it was cramped. After waiting for about 10 minutes our waiter finally came over and took our drink order, we ordered a frozen strawberry margarita and a margarita on the rocks no salt. The margarita on rocks came first with salt, about 10 to 15 minutes later, my frozen regular margarita came. Now food wise, hearing this was an authentic Mexican restaurant i was excited only to be extremely disappointed by the overpriced and limited menu options. We ordered queso as an app, what we got was a small dish of melted mozzarella cheese with three pieces of "chorizo" on top. Tried once piece and a pile of oil and grease filled more of the bowl than cheese. ABSOLUTELY GROSS. Later the queso was taken away and we did mention it just wasn't very good at all. Later our entrees of tacos arrived..cold and mushy. Expecting a crunchy shell with hot beef inside, i received two mushy shells with cold rice and the beef was terrible, i barely touched my plate. Overall we left unsatisfied and still hungry. I would not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for an affordable and delicious Mexican meal!

It's average, but then again aren't most of the "Mexican" joints in the area? We went with a Groupon. Parking can be tricky in Newton Centre. The restaurant is down an alleyway and sort of hard to find. Food was well-portioned and solid. I had the vegetarian fajitas - not the best I've ever had, but certainly not the worst. Guacamole and salsa tasted fresh, although they lacked any spice whatsoever. Our server also told us the restaurant typically charges for chip and salsa refills; he ultimately gave us the chips and billed $3 for the salsa. It seems like both are complimentary at most other places, within reason. Waitstaff was pleasant. However, they did leave us for long periods of time without checking in for drink refills, cashing out, etc. I don't expect them to hang on me, but swing by the table periodically. We probably won't make a special trip back. When in Newton Centre and craving Mexican, though, Cafe Sol Azteca is a viable option.

Been here a couple times now- good solid food, good service. One star solely for the great patio they have. Try to get a table out there when the weather's nice. I love that you have to hunt for the place (down the creaky wooden stairs, through the back alley, I feel dangerous!!). The chorizo quesadilla we got was delish- it was an appetizer special that night, not sure if it's on the menu or not. Good enchiladas.

Pros: 1) It has a beautiful outdoor patio in the summer. (Not when we visited, but I hear it's lovely from other family members.) 2) They make a seriously great mojito! 3) Really great chips and salsa! 4) My food was good. Overpriced and not phenomenal, but solidly good. Cons: We waited 30 mins. on an early Sunday night--before what we thought would be the prime dinner hour. Unfortunately, there is no place to wait in the cramped alcove leading up to the host stand. There were others on the stairs, making it difficult to even get to the host to put in our names. We tried getting bitten by mosquitos for awhile near the patio and kitchen's exhaust fan, before retreating to literally wait in the adjacent alley. Upon being seated, and getting a high chair, there was no place to put the extra chair that was removed. It sat there with people tripping on it as they went by our table. Our next BIG issue was that they didn't bring us chips or water for about 15 mins. after seating us. When you have hungry, young children in tow, that is a BIG problem. In fact, it turns an angel child into a gremlin. The table next to us was seated after us and got their chips and salsa along with their menus. They are NOT kid-friendly and although they have high chairs, I think they should just tell folks that they aren't kid-friendly. We totally respect non-kid friendly establishments. In fact, we visit them exclusively on date night. However, we called ahead to make sure this place was kid-friendly, and instead ended up feeling scorned. Not cool. Outcome: We've decided we'll be happier campers if we go again on a date night without the kids, and just order drinks and apps. and/or dessert. Note: They skimp on the guacamole and avocado where it states that it comes with your dish. Order accordingly!

I had delivery from this establishment, and this occasion was different because it was my mom's birthday and I wanted her to experience something new. The food is incredibly over priced and "tacos out of a box tasted better". I would have said worse things but I would rather of had Domino's pizza then the slop I received. Impressed that they used fresh vegetables but beans were from can and rice was from box. Plain and no flavor this was highly rated on other sites, disappointing show of Mexican food. Avoid this place if you want to save some money.

i was surprised to see this only had 3 stars. this place is great. everything is pretty authentic here. the bathrooms are small and the service can be slow, but the food is always good. everything we have ever had here is good. i love the napalitos for an app too, not many places have that. they have big combination dishes which is great for someone who is hungry. the green sauce is great, rice and beans are always good and the purple cabbage is a nice touch. its always good here, cannot wait to go back in the summer and sit outside. the chips are also good with the salsa. you never leave hungry.

I have no idea why some of the reviews of this place are so bad. I just moved to Boston from Texas, and I will admit that this is not perfect Tex Mex. However, it is more than serviceable, even if you have the world's highest standards, like me. Pluses: Enchiladas. We tried the verdes, rojas, and poblano (which have a mole sauce). All VERY good. Chips and salsa: Free if you're ordering an entree! And bottomless. Service: Everyone was SO nice. Atmosphere: It felt like Houston. It was good to be home. Some other things that aren't so great? Well, the margarita was a little weak and the rice was really bland. But this is absolutely worth checking out. I will go back and try some of the more straight-Mex rather than Tex-Mex menu items, and perhaps report back on those, but for now, come here! It doesn't deserve the bad rap it's getting on Yelp.

I ate at this restaurant before a while back. Not at the recommendation of yelp but at the recommendation of a friend who was raving about it. While I agree with the other reviewers here that the margaritas are really "knock your socks off" strong, the food is average but not bad. I had some sort of combo plate with an enchilada type enter that was very cheesy and saucy. If you like cheesy this would be your thing. Looking for a good local restaurant in Newton that has good sangria. Maybe I will give this one place another shot. I can remember it was fun when I went there. The reviews for th Sangria seem positive.

This is a hard review to score because there are solid pros and cons. pros: great atmosphere (afuera) delicious margaritas and bangin' guacamole so why 2 stars? cons: male server was slightly rude when we discovered we just wanted drinks and apps (mostly gave us sneering smiles and ignored us) super expensive! the bill came to 60 or 70 bucks for 2 margaritas, guacamole, chips and salsa (yes they bring it out without asking and charge you if you don't order an entree) and one cup of gazpacho.

We had a reservation for 7 (I've read that they don't take reservations, so they must have call ahead seating). Our friends were running a few minutes behind so when our names were called at 7 for a table the host said we would have the next available table as soon as the rest of our party arrived. Between 7 and 7:45 we watched 4 tables seated before us and when we finally wave the host over to ask what is going on, he asks us what our name on the reservation is again. He had obviously forgotten about us and without even an apology said "you'll have the next table because I've already promised the party across the patio the next table for 4". 3 more tables are sat before we are even looked at again. Walk out the door at 7:50.

i tried cafe sol azteca for the first time with my boyfriend, parents, and grandparents. the food was very good, and i'm excited to go back and try other dishes on the menu. however, our waiter was quite impatient, mixed up a few dishes, and i would hope that on my next visit the waitstaff would be more of a positive aspect. i started with the ensalada azteca, which was mixed greens with grilled cactus, a few tomatoes and 2 big slices of fresh avocado. i got the dressing on the side, and was glad that i did because it was on the sweeter side. i really liked the salad, and was surprised to find that cactus actually tastes a lot like cooked green beans, but with a bit of a kick. other dishes were the nopalitos (cactus cooked in cheese), queso asado (cheese with chorizo sausage), and nachitos. the cheese dishes were flavorful, and the portion size was just right for an appetizer as cheese can get to be pretty heavy after a while. for the dinner, i ordered the camarones azteca, which was a special for the night. it was much more modestly priced than the other shrimp dishes on the menu ($20 instead of $24-26) and was very good. 5 or 6 butterflied shrimp cooked in cilantro and onions, served with rice, beans, and guacamole. and the guacamole was excellent! my mom and grandmother split the chicken fajitas. the vegetables were cooked very well and they had plenty to eat between the 2 of them. my dad and grandfather both loved the enchiladas, and my dad was excited that he could get one chicken and one beef since he really couldn't choose. my boyfriend enjoyed the beef tostados, but i didn't get to try them. by this point i was very full, but of course we had to get dessert. my mom and i had the flan, which was cold, dense and served with a great caramel sauce over it. my grandmother got the bananas with caramel-rum sauce and walnuts and i only got 1 or 2 bites before she kept the rest for herself - it was delicious! like i said in the beginning, all of the food was great, but our waiter was less than impressive. he got impatient when he came up to the table and we asked him a few questions about the appetizers and told us he couldn't stand there waiting for us to order. my grandmother was curious about the cream of cactus soup, and his explanation was that it was just cactus and cream soup. duh, we got that from the menu description! then, when the appetizers arrived, he mixed up the dishes. this wasn't the biggest deal, but when many food items look similar, it's hard to know which is which as the diner. he then also reversed my dad and grandfather's entrees, and my grandfather was embarrassed that he had started to eat my dad's dish. i also wish we had a little more time to finish our appetizers before the dinners came. overall, we all really enjoyed the food and will definitely return to the restaurant to try other dishes on the menu.

I feel like it doesn't really have the right spices or flavors or SOMETHING. Everything I've had there was pretty bland and it doesn't taste homemade...the enchilada sauce probably comes from a can. Our mission: find a tasty Mexican joint since it is Monday and La Paloma is closed. Our asassin team: myself and foodie roommate/platonic lifemate Our decision: scope out Cafe Sol Azteca, since aforementioned cohort works with the manager Our arrival: easy. getting to union street/newton centre is a bit out of our way, but not terribly so. it was moderately entertaining to walk through a dark alley-like way (i think this is the patio in the summer) to get to the restaurant. Our impression of the restaurant: cozy. very down-home mexican (does this exist? well, it does in my mind). cool tile tables and wood/brick paneling. Our chips, salsa and guac: very tasty. i would have liked the chips more salty, and warm, but still solid. the guac was creamy. Our adult beverages: solid. stoked they had pacifico, which was featured on the specials menu. i don't like margaritas, but theirs looked fine. Our meals: again, tasty. and plentiful. my dish was definitely dinner and the next day's lunch. his carne asada all looked fabulous. the rice was a bit bland, and i would have liked spicier refried beans. Our check: moderate. manager comped our drinks and chips, which was an unnecessary friendly gesture. he was also involved with seeing that other guests were satisfied with their dining experience. Our conclusion: we'll be back when in the area.

I also found this place on an open Mic night, now Wednesdays, and have eaten here occasionally when I am in the area. Although a little pricey, it was obvious from the menu this is not your average tex-mex restaurant! This is authentic Mexican food as served in downtown Mexical City. I can recommend the tostada's, and found they are even better if you order the Carnitas Tostadas. The Steak Ranchero is my favorite. My wife ordered the Shrimp dinner and loved it! I also loved the fact that the meals came with Red Cabbage which is associated with German cuisine (my other favorite) but there was a German influence in Mexico in the !800's which obviously worked it's way into their cuisine. On the minus side I thought the free Salsa chips were a little thick but the Salsa itself is unbeatable! Outside Patio is great! Inside dining area is a little cramped but acceptable.

Go down a dimly lit staircase in the middle of an alley for dinner? Uh, sure, let me just grab my mace and make sure someone large with lots of muscles walks in front of me and I'm good to go. Besides the initial/potential sketchyness in the beginning of the night, everything else was amazing. Quick seating for 6 on a Saturday which was amazing, great outdoor atmosphere, friendly staff who don't laugh at you when you most likely butcher the name of the meal you're gonna get, and the drinks? Holy tequila. The free chips (with great salsa) might have been the only thing keeping me from stumbling my way out of there. Portions were sizable, and I managed to chow down on everything (besides the sides of beans which looked more like black paste to me and the purple cabbage which I haven't touched since an unfortunate St. Patty's day incident when I was young) and was completely satisfied and stuffed at the end. All in all, if you can actually find this place (we managed to on complete accident in a "I'm new in town and I'm gonna wander around til I find a place to eat" way) it's a great way to spend an evening in Newton Corner.

My sister and I have a holiday tradition of Mexican dining. We usually go to Acapulco's, but since Cafe Sol Azteca got the best reviews in the area, we decided to break from the usual and try something new. I LOVE Mexican food, and never thought I could be disappointed by it, but Cafe Sol Azteca managed to accomplish that feat. I ordered the chilaquiles, which I have had many times, and they were very bland. I thought chilaquiles were supposed to have tortilla chips, salsa and cheese, but mine was just a pile of shredded chicken with (I think it was) cheese on top. I had to drown it in sour cream and the too sweet table salsa in order to eat it. My sister liked her fajitas, but for the price, the food is just not up to par. I know Boston is definitely not the mecca for Mexican food, but I will be back to Acapulco's next year.

I had my first dinning experience here with a group of friends to celebrate a few birthdays. A few people from our group had been here before and really liked the food. I enjoy good authentic Mexican food and was happy to try someplace I had never been. So here goes... The Pros: The authentic food, large portions, great if you want to split an entrÃ©e with someone. The margaritas were excellent. Really good chips and salsa. Fresh guacamole. The atmosphere was cozy and has great outdoor patio dining. The Backyard Bar is right next door.(more on that) The Cons: The service! Do not expect an attentive pleasant wait staff. Is it to much to ask for a smile and a friendly, "How are you this evening? Can I start you off with a drink?" I guess so. It went more like this with our waiter.. "Drinks?" with and impatient stare. He scuttles away. We have to flag him down several times in hopes to order an appetizer for the table, another drink, or ask a question about the menu, in which our waiter walks away, while waving a hand to shush us before we even finish asking for another drink! Yes he did do that! He seemed very irritated that he even had to give us that much attention. A time passes before we have to wave him over again to order our meal. (Again the food was a Pro. Also, I only mentioned the Backyard Bar next door as a Pro, because we all wanted another drink and did not get a chance to order one with our meal. So we went next door after for that drink) The worst part of our dinning experience was the waiter actually came back with our "paid" bill and questioned our party about the tip we left based on our service!!! We left the standard 15%. Our group generally pays 18-20% which is when we have gotten attentive friendly service. It is not ,nor has ever been, mandatory to leave a gratuity. I think it is rude to not leave a tip but, the tip you leave should reflect how you felt about your dinning experience. Correct me if I am wrong but, isn't a tip is a courtesy saying thank you, from the dinners to the waiter and staff for good service and a pleasant dinning experience? My tip is ... this restaurant needs to train their wait staff how to be attentive friendly servers. Until this happens the great food will get overshadowed by the "lackluster" service every time.

When I stopped in front of the little Cafe Sol Azteca sign, I was confronted by a narrow, dim (and quite sketchy, if i werent in Newton) alleyway. I thought this cant possibly be the entrance way to a nice restaurant, but after going down the staircase, I felt I just transported to Mexico. Vivid, contrasting colors. Open patio with common, bourgeoisie decor. The interior was quaint and nostalgic. Perfect atmosphere. I'm not a huge fan of mexican cuisine, but the food was good by Mexican standards. The dishes seem to be smothered in sauce (though the sauce is great), and little too overwhelmed with cheesy goodness. Though I loved the service, two of us had dirty silverware (huge pet peeve). But I guess that just means we really were in Mexico!

I give this place 3 stars mainly because of the inconspicuous patio. I feel like Boston lacks a lot of good outdoor seating options and this place is like a hidden alley gem. The patio is pretty big and so cute The food is so-so but I think the atmosphere makes up for it. This is a great summer spot for drinks, I wouldn't say the food is the best. There are much better Mexican restaurants around the city than this (ie. Rosa Mexicano and Papagayo (love)).

I don't get what everyone's complaining about. I've been here a thousand times, and yeah, I've gotten 2 or 3 things I didn't like, but: 1. The salsa isn't watery at all. 2. The chilaquiles aren't bland or messed up. 3. The chips are always salted, and never stale.

$70 for two people and two drinks? My wife also asked for a virgin margaritas, which admitedly is basically leomonade, and they still charged the full $6 and change. Service was a C- due to lack of attention, portions were a C, drinks tasted good but were unusually small, outdoor seating was nice but don't expect sun unless it's directly overhead. I'd give it another shot since pete k. rates it so highly but it's an uphill battle.

I was having one of those days. You know the kind. An emergency at work, a meeting that last an hour and a half longer than it should, and I finally hit the road after working for 12 hours. All I could think about was how much I needed a drink. My cell phone rings, do I want to meet some friends at Cafe Sol Azteca? Why yes, yes I do. I am in desperate need of a delicious margarita. Let's start with the aforementioned margarita. Frozen, strawberry, no salt. It's the way they should all be made. With the first sip, I tasted tequila, which let me know right away that I wasn't just drinking the mix and ice. It was sweet but not too sweet, and filled with huge chunks of strawberries. Yes, they clogged my straw a bit, but so worth it! Cover the world in black beans, and I will eat it. My big problem with them is that I have an allergy to cilantro. Ok, I may not be ~technically~ allergic, but there is little in the world that is worse than cilantro. Anyway, most Mexican joints cover everything in cilantro, especially the black beans. The thing is, they are delicious without that crap. So when I ordered the Beef Tostadas, I asked for no cilantro. They waiter told me that there is no cilantro in the dish. Whaaaa? Are you sure? I believed he knew what he was talking about, but I was skeptical all the same. Simply put, the dish was awesome. Huge portion, so I have lunch for tomorrow. My friends ordered the Tostada Oaxaca, the Enchiladas Verdes, and my friend that ordered the Tostada Carnitas special was so enthralled by his meal that he insisted everyone try it. I'd like to see someone about buying a pint of those black beans.

I go to Cafe Sol Azteca frequently and it is pretty good Mexican food. Guacamole and salsa is good. Sangria is a good choice here and their bar does a decent job. The entrees have some good seasoning, but can be a little pedestrian. For example, they serve really boring mexican rice, refried beans and a bland cabbage with a lot of the dishes. You get the impression the cook is indifferent. Also, I can be a late eater, showing up at 9pm. They always get really pissy about this and the service becomes hostile. Supposedly they close at 10, but show up after 9 and bad service is certain.

Relatively acceptable Mexican food given WHERE we are. At this point, I've decided it's hopeless to hold out for anything really good in this state, or maybe even in this entire region. Approximately the closest place to Boston for true Mexican is somewhere in the region of Chicago. At any rate, this restaurant serves all the standard menu items and does it in a tolerable manner. The better aspect of this restaurant is the location and the partial outdoor setting, which is very lovely in summer. I think it's about the end of things when a restaurant is being praised for the setting more than the food, but that's about the story when it comes to Mexican in the Boston area.

For years, I went to Sol Azteca at least once a week. Now that I live a bit of a distance away, going there is a great and more rare treat. I love the food at Sol Azteca, and the waitstaff feel like family. They're always friendly and patient. The margaritas are great, and the guacamole is terrific, as is the salsa. My "go to" dish is the Combanacion Sol, with an enchilada verde with chicken and a bean tostada. But I love the camarones al cilantro, the pork, the fajitas...really, everything on the menu. The food is a bit pricey if you're accustomed to cheap beans and rice--but that's not what this restaurant is all about. It's about quality Mexican food.

I really like Sol Azteca. But I hate going there. Its one of those places that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, even though it has nothing to do with the delicious margs (a bit overpriced but good) and guac. I went on a first date there with one of the biggest douchebags in Boston. I wish I could yelp him haha. I should have known when only spoke out of one side of his mouth, when he told me he shaved his whole body (gag!) and spent most nights out in Southie with his yay'd out friends. But back to business -- the food is clean at Sol Azteca. Which is not a word I would usually use for Mexican. But the plate isn't overrun by tons of flavors and sauces. They usually keep it classy and straight Mexican. I love all the tiling inside (same as the tiles in my old house in New Mexico!) and I wish I owned one of those sweet Mexican dresses the waitresses wear. They are always super cute and don't mind if you speak in Spanish (even if you mangle it a bit). So go ahead and practice while getting yourself some classic Mejicana cuisine! Si, sabe a gloria!

If I was solely basing this on food, then it would have been a two-star review based on my experience. But I took into account the experiences' of my dining companions and the service. The staff was friendly and attentive. My water glass was never empty and WOW do they know how to make a drink. Between the sangria (with a nice hint of cinnamon), the margaritas, and the mojitos, Sol Azteca definitely got it right (and strong)! The salsa was really very good, but the chips were so very, very disappointing. They tasted old, cold, and with out even a hint of salt to give them some flavor. The guacamole was ok, but certainly no where near the best I've ever had. I ordered a special beef dish with a mushroom, onion cream sauce. I wasn't impressed and it was $22 yikes! It was tough and the rice wasn't very good either. Others at the table enjoyed their meal. My husband and two others ordered a soft steak taco special that was good and liked by everyone who ordered it - I tried a bite and had to agree. I don't know if I would rush back. It's a small place with a few seats close to the door (where we were) and it got a bit cold. There are other places not too far away the I prefer.

The sangria was good and so were the margaritas. The patio is very comfortable and because is it between two buildings it is shaded, but you still get benefits of being outside. It is not fancy, but it is comfortable and a good place to meet up with friends. The food was average. I had the Enchiladas Verde and they were decent. I grew up in Los Angeles and lived in the Southwest most of my life, so it is hard to say that this is good authentic Mexican, but it was good for the area. The only negative that was truly a detractor from going here is that the wait staff was a bit hurried. It wasn't really that busy and it felt like they were in a rush for you to leave. Overall I think it was a good place, but a little out of the way for me to frequent it.

The only reason this place is getting two stars (instead of one) is b/c it's fair/decent mexican food for BOSTON. If this restaurant were anywhere else, I'd give it 0-1 stars. Chips were cold, salsa had no kick and was runny (as in, no chunks of tomatoes or onions). I had sangria, which I realize is not really authentic mex, but it was NOT GOOD. No fruit, entirely too sweet, and you couldn't see through it (sangria should be translucent, not opaque). The last and biggest offense... the $$$. For fair to middlin' mexican food, this place has some pretty steep prices (many entrees were between $15-20). In all honesty, if given the choice between taco bell and this place, I'd probably choose Taco Bell. The good? Outdoor seating, nice enough service, location, and friendly for larger groups. I suggest trying Taqueria Mexico in Waltham instead.

I LOOOVE Mexican food. When I moved to Newton Centre 11 years ago, I was thrilled to see that there was a Mexican restaurant a few short blocks from my house. I asked around, and people said it was good so I was juiced to give it a try. What a waste! I've been patient enough to return to Sol Azteca at least once a year the whole time I've lived in Newton. I live in the apparently futile hope that the owners will either learn how or hire someone who knows how to cook. Without a doubt, this is some of the WORST Mexican food on the planet. The salsa is weak and watery, the chips are insanely thick, always cold, rarely salted and frequently stale, and while the menu is well written, the food prepared from it has never once even begun to match the description. I've had everything from enchiladas with cold fillings served with grated (not melted) cheese on them to carne asada that was cooked so long (and not marinated nearly long enough) that it was so tough I literally could not chew it. The mole sauce some are raving about? All I can conclude is that these people have never had properly prepared mole sauce. Thin, dark & flavorless, it's bloody awful. And the chicken was drowning in it, but then if I had to have my moment of culinary glory in such a flavorless pond, I'd drown myself, too!. I've never gotten the same margarita twice, although I've ordered it! In the same visit, I've gone from a treacly-sweet marg that was worse than anything pre-mixed from a liquor store to one so sour that even I (who eats limes & lemons) could not finish it. At least half of the times I have visited, my beer has been warm and served to me with a glass hot from the dishwasher (a TOTAL pet peeve of mine). For 11 years, I have marveled at this restaurant's ability to stay in business in two expensive real estate locales (they have another location on westbound Beacon Street in Brookline near Fenway Park). I've concluded that Bostonians, while palate-educated in most cuisines, must not know a damned thing about Mexican food. I've spent too much time in the southwest to let this ridiculous excuse for a restaurant get a pass. Please, Sol Azteca - do Newton Centre a favor & vacate your prime spot for a restaurant worth visiting! If you crave Mexican food, just swing over to Stop & Shop and pick up some Old El Paso. I don't think it's good, but it is infinitely better than anything you'll be served at Sol Azteca.

Alright, alright, I've said a lot of hateful things since I moved to New England about Mexican food. Ok, so they were all well deserved but there were some blanket statements made (It all sucks, I've had more flavorful cardboard, etc). But on occassion I let that "I'm a Woman and I'm Never Wrong" mentality go, painful as it may be, and admit that I was wrong. And I was wrong. It's not ALL bad here in Boston, in fact, Cafe Sol Azteca is freakin fabulous. It's really easy to jack up a mole sauce and wind up with chocolate sauce with some habenero in it but, oooooh maaah gawd it was perfect. Sangria was a fabulous blend of fruityness without being overly sweet. Even the salsa was fresh and spicy! So for making me soooooo happy I'll forgive them for making me wrong and head back to their super cute patio for another cocktail.

Finding this restaurant wasn't easy but I liked the food and loved the patio. I had the Chillies Rellano (sp) which were OK and my daughter had the Guacamole Salad, which turned out to be just an ice cream scoop of guac on a lettuce leaf. Prices seemed high for Mexican food - my entre was $15 for two chillies, some red cabbage, rice and small portion of refritos, the guacamole salad was $8.

I was planning on coming into Newton for some good food and good company. I had the good company but not the good food. We arrived at Cafe Sol Azteca through this very narrow walkway. We were greeted by what seemed to be the owner and a nice hostess. They seated us outside without even asking if we wanted to sit outside. I didnt mind it but wouldve liked to have been asked first! Our waiter was Luis and he did his job. Just that and nothing else, didnt refill our drinks, didnt smile. Wasnt friendly much. My friend and I both order enchiladas verde and it came out pretty quick. So quick i was thinking they made it ahead of time waiting for it to be ordered. Hmmm... All and all it was just okay. I've made much better enchiladas at home. The water we ordered had no ice and had lemon in it. I dont like lemon in my water so i wasnt too pleased with that. I probably wont return here and will try some other nicer place in Newton.

I've been eating at Sol Azteca with my family for almost two decades. There are a few noteworthy things about the restaurant that make it a favorite in my foodie diet. 1) The sangria is rich and delicious and hands down the tastiest I've ever tried. 2) The outdoor patio is among the very top places to enjoy a lovely summer evening with friends and good eats. The indoors is charming as well. 3) The food is reliably flavorful and filling. Some favorites: nopalitos appetizer (tangy cactus smothered in cheese), chiles rellenos (stuffed with pork and/or cheese), and the spicy seafood special (when they say spicy, they mean it!)

"Do you guys want to have dinner? We were planning on grilling outside or eating somewhere that they have a patio" This was the text message to our friends that landed us at Cafe Sol Azteca. When we showed up it was okay, we were a bit early. It's a bit odd that no matter how you approach the restaurant you have to walk down an alley. I also find it odd that people bring their little white dogs to come eat here. I know it's not really the restaurant's fault, but there is nothing I dislike more than little white dogs. It stems from my great grandmother having the most vicious little white poodle when I was a small child. The thing gave me nightmares for years after it died and was buried in the flower bed in her front yard. So of course we got seated next to a table that had a little white dog at it. The service was pretty good, they brought us drinks while waiting for a table, and the table service was pretty good too. The food was a bit pricey and was a bit less flavorful than I've come to expect from good mexican food. The beans were a bit bland and the chips and salsa were missing something. I think a little salt would work wonders.

The two-star description sums it up - Meh. I've experienced better. I think my main problem with Sol is the price. When it comes down to it, I've had plenty of okay so-so Mexican meals (like what I had at Sol) at places like On The Border or wherever. The difference is they were a good $4-5 cheaper per entree. If Sol was $10-16 dollars per meal instead of $15-25 per meal I'd have thought it was great - the price would've matched the food. But really there's nothing amazing about the food, so why should I pay a premium for it? And yes, the chips I got were cold and somewhat stale. They had plenty of salt, and the salsa was actually really good, but the basket of chips we got were all broken, cold, and kinda stale. So, I won't say I'll never be back, but I will say I'm gonna try Acalpulcos down the road before I try Sol again.

3 1/2 stars. Nice outdoor seating (in case you missed that part in the other reviews) but expect to wait at least 30 minutes for it. Margaritas are served in small, non-margarita glasses but pretty tasty. A bit pricey ($18 for fajitas, no thanks) but compared to the other awful mexican restaurants in the area I guess it's worth paying for.

Good for Families - Go Early Bird and Al Fresco Sol Azteca is a fine Mexican for families, especially eating on the patio. Go for an early dinner ~6 and the service is fast, the place uncrowded, the food ample and tasty.

Wow, can't believe I have not reviewed SA yet! A low rating for "high priced" food is not a valid rating. A low rating for "over priced" food, however, would be. Yes - Sol Azteca has pricier food than say, Border Cafe.. but the food is LEAGUES better. Like, 20,000 LEAGUES under the sea - thats the kind of LEAGUE I am talking about. Having been several times, I have sampled many items. Sometimes, I will admit, I am only "ho-hum" about the dish.. and that's usually when I get something "authentic". However, even a "ho-hum" dish, like simple enchiladas or tostadas, will come with the most amazing rice and beans I've had in a mexican restaurant. I don't know what it is - but they really have incredible stuff. The picco de gallo is fantastic, as well - along side the super fresh and addicting guac, and real salsa. Not crappy jarred stuff that some other places get from a food supplier or Costco. This stuff is real, and you can taste each ingredient. The chips are great, too - fresh and even hot at times. It has a really nice atmosphere inside, and a absolutely fantastic patio outside. Its tiered and well organized - and for those who haven't been, its in a courtyard between buildings - there's no street to be seen. Totally secluded and very nice. Drinks are good - and if you are nice, they offer them while you wait for a table. Now the reason I came here - TACOS RANCHEROS. The greatest mexican meal I've ever had. I still don't know what they did to the magical beef in these tacos, or what the heavenly cheese was, but these soft tacos were un-freakin-real. I thought of them last night while I ate a beef soft taco at Border Cafe.. and kept wishing and wishing I had the Sol Azteca ones. Sure, the Sol Azteca tacos cost $16 instead of the $8 I paid at Border (I here allude to my earlier statement about price) - but that was the best $16 I have eaten in a LONG, LONG time. If you want cheap Mexican, you get cheap food - cheap quality, cheap flavor, cheap price. Sol Azteca isn't cheap - but the food is worth every penny.

My friends and I stumbled upon this place after work on a warm summer night and had a wonderfully relaxing time eating in the outdoor patio area. I ordered the pollo al cilantro which was good - I wouldn't hesitate to order the same dish again. The food was much more expensive than what we're normally willing to pay for Mexican, but we didn't even think to complain about it because it had been such a pleasant dining experience. I can't wait for the weather to get warmer so I can spend more after-work hours there!

I wouldn't be able to say enough about the service, food, atmosphere, and people working at Sol Azteca in Newton Ctr. Gabriel, the manager, Alex, the host, and Andres, our waiter not only accommodated us, but went above and beyond in allowing us to use a coupon that was actually only good at the Boston location. We had various dishes from the sautÃ©ed cactus to a fish filet with cilantro sauce, and let me tell you, it was all spectacular! You know you're in an authentic Mexican restaurant when there's a dish with a choice of mole sauce! The chips and salsa that you're served beforehand hit the spot, the tres leches cake and chocolate mousse dessert were out of this world! Please go eat, treat the waiters well, and they will take care of you!

We went on a Friday night. It was nice out, so the seating for outside was going to be a long wait. We opted to sit inside instead. Very nicely decorated. The menu was a little disappointing. I am a huge burrito person and they only have a vegetarian version. Bad move for a Mexican restaurant IMO. They focused on enchiladas. I tried one with verde sauce and one with red. Red was gross. Green was ok. Entrees are served with red cabbage, refried black beans, and Mexican rice. The chips and salsa at the beginning was the best part of the meal. Chips are eh as other reviews have commented. Overall, wasn't bad, but not good and it wasn't cheap. $15-$18 per plate.

Given the fact that I live in in Boston and good Mexican food isn't exactly easy to come by, Cafe Sol Azteca is one of the few good places that meets my mex-food expectations. Personally, I love the Tacos Rancheros - they are out of this world, but other plates are good too. The kitchen is very consistent and things taste delicious every time. Staff is friendly with a few exceptions. Would recommend!

Small place with a cozy interior - there can be a wait to get in. Staff is friendly and food comes quickly, but drink service at this particular location is usually slow. They give you a basket of tortilla chips and an excellent chunky salsa when seated. Their ENCHILADAS POBLANAS are great love the mole sauce, and you cant go wrong with QUESO ASADO - melted cheese is good on everything.

Great ambience. Good margaritas and sangria. Waiters were mostly attentive. Food would be acceptable if entrees cost 10 dollars but they cost twice that. Chips and tortillas don't taste homemade and weren't warm. Very light on the meat in the dishes. No homemade hot sauce (Beacon Street Sol Azteca makes their own). Ole/Zocalo are much better for the money.

Nice Mexican spot. A bit upscale. Yummy mole and decor. A bit limited on entrees for vegetarians. I usually order the mole cheese enchiladas whatever they call them. They are delicious, but I'm using my 'don't ask. don't tell' policy for whether or not they are actually vegetarian. Unfortunately it seems that they're not open at lunch all the time. Is it during the winter? I can't quite figure it out. It was trying to go to this restaurant and finding it closed that led me to try Sabra down the street. Go to Sol Azteca (not Sabra).

Food was good...except when condiments were needed and the wait staff was no where to be found. I had to get up 2 times to get service and then it took several more minutes to actually get the service...and then it was bad. And I reached out to SEVERAL different people. The atmosphere has real potential as does the food but it was ruined by the absolutely atrocious service. I wouldn't waste my time or money here again...which is too bad because I actually enjoyed my meal.

I love this place very much, it's another childhood classic. I like that you have to go through an alley to find it -- no matter which door you enter through. I like the outdoor seating, even though the dim lighting on later summer nights has a tendency to convince me to order chicken livers, which is always a bad idea, no matter who cooks them. I like the sangria, I like the chips, I like the waiters not understanding what I'm saying, I like the enchiladas, the mole, the whole thing.

Some of the best Mexican food around, and the greatest staff and waiters. The Sangria is amazing, the margaritas yummy, and the chicken mole enchiladas to die for. A great restaurant in a great location as well. I can bring my kids there, go with girlfriends, or go there on a date and it is stellar. Highly recommended.

The Enchiladas Rojas tomato sauce literally tasted like it came out of a can of diced/crushed tomatoes. Hardly any flavor. Soggy. Entree prices are ridiculous for the quality and portion size of what you are given. Chips used to be fresh, but mine were stale and tasted like old tostitos. Salsa was good, little watery. Half order of guacamole was tasty, but they literally gave maybe 5 tablespoons for $4. Both nopalitos and guacamole were tasty. Wouldnt recommend it honestly, have better luck at Casa Romero or the Boston sol Azteca locations.

Returning back here a few times, the service has gotten increasingly slow on busy nights. Went here on a Friday and it seems they can't keep up with the crowds. They forget drink orders and slam plates down on your table. I still like the food though, but it also seems the prices have gone up. Mexican Food shouldn't be this expensive even for Newton standards.

Came here on a Friday night, though relatively early, and the two of us were seated right away. I ordered a margarita, the boy got sangria -- I chose wisely. The sangria was kind of watery? And had a strong brandy scent that reminded me of sugar cookies, which is just weird for sangria. But the margarita (salt, on the rocks) was solid, so I'm assuming they use a tequila that's less nasty than Cuervo. Our drinks came promptly and we ordered enchiladas and stuffed poblano peppers. The food was ready in a mere heartbeat! And it was really quite tasty. The menu was a little bit sparse for choices, and most of the interesting things were kind of spendy (around $20 for the special entrees). The more traditional Mexican options were kind of overpriced for what they were. Like, I can make my own enchiladas for less than $15, thanks. Service was attentive but laid back. They brought my boyfriend some habanero sauce when we asked if they offered a spicy salsa (house salsa is delicious, but hardly spicy at all). That stuff will mess you up. So I'd say the food is 3 stars (specials might be better, but I'm a cheap bastard) but the quick service and tasty margarita were high quality.

That might not be saying much since the food in Boston and around is nothing to write home about, but on a Boston area scale of 1 to 5, this place has to be a 5. I have eaten here several times and have consistently had a great experience. The mole enchilades are the tastiest item on the menu. Service is good, great outdoor seating the warmer months. Everything I have tried on the menu has been good quality, and very close to authentic Mexican food.

I love Cafe Sol Azteca when I want to go out for a quick bite to eat. Seriously, once you order they are SO FAST. I guess because they've got such a small space, they've perfected getting people in and out quick. This only holds true obviously if you don't get there at the most popular times and end up waiting for half an hour (which does happen on nice evenings in the summer with people waiting for the nice outdoor seating). I love all the enchiladas, and haven't explored the menu much beyond that. The servings are generous, and I always leave full and happy.

Ah, wintery days like today make me wish for the summer patio dining of Sol Azteca. I love their Sangria and their salsa..sitting on the jungle-like patio in the heat of a summer night. Ahhh.. well anyway. The food at this place is about the best Mexican food I can find this far north of the border. The decor inside is great, fun mosaic tile tables and high back chairs that make you feel like Spanish royalty. Love it! The servers are friendly and are eager to please. Mmmmm Mexican!

Although I've never been big on Mexican food, I'm a fan of Sol Azteca. Seating on an outdoor patio + gazpacho + refreshing Sangria = great summer meal.

Don't let the [few] bad reviews concern you if you've never been here before. I am VERY picky - and I do not give reviews for every restaurant I visit. Sol Azteca (the one in Newton Center, NOT Brookline) is one of my favorite restaurants (if not my absolute favorite) and I think the management in the Newton location DESERVES as many good reviews as possible. They work hard - and it shows. In my opinion, Sol Azteca is not completely authentic Mexican - I'd say they put an American spin on it. To me, this is exactly what I love about it. The food is DELECTABLE, the service is IMPECCABLE, and the establishment is CLEAN. And did I mention you have to wait about 3.5 seconds for your food order? They are VERY speedy. My favorite dish is Enchiladas Verdes. If you haven't tried it - I recommend it highly. And I doubt there is any way you could not LOVE this dish. It's mouth-watering delicious. My husband usually orders the beef tacos - and he loves it. We bring all of our friends there and I have never once heard any complaints. As soon as you sit down, they serve you fresh chips and salsa, which I usually devour just in time for my meal to come. And they have delicious sangria - and my favorite cabernet. The restaurant decor makes you feel like you are on vacation in Mexico - and they also have an outdoor, covered terrace area with plenty of seating. The manager of the Newton restaurant, Gabriel, is a doll. We go there a lot - and he recognizes us every time (as do many of the wait staff - who are also extremely polite and friendly). He always comes over to our table to ask how we are doing and thank us for coming. I think it's rare that someone in his position, who must be quite busy, treat customers with such personal care and genuine appreciativeness (Is that even a word? If not - I'm making it one). Recently we moved from Boston to the suburbs. It used to take 3 minutes to get to Sol Azteca - now we have to drive at least 1/2 hour - but it doesn't phase us at all. It's worth it - and I'll always come back for delicious food, prompt service and a consistency that I truly appreciate and enjoy. GREAT JOB, NEWTON CENTER SOL AZTECA! Keep it up!

One of my favorite date restaurants in the Boston area. Great Mexican food (hard to come by around here for sure), but what makes this place a true gem is the ambiance - I would happily wait as long as necessary for a table on the patio, which is 75% of the reason I go. The enchiladas are my favorite, and I love the Sangria.

Sol Azteca is a great place to go for a nice relaxed evening with Mexican food with margueritas and sangria. My favorite is the Pollo al Cilantro. Waitstaff is always very courteous and their outdoor seating is wonderful. It can be romantic for a date or just relaxed for a casual gathering with friends.

Pretty light and fresh for Mexican food. The gazpacho is awesome, as is the quacamole. I would get the quesedillas rojas or chicken fajitas and then super light flan for dessert. The inside is buzzy warm and has a great feel, but the outside dining is awesome in the summer- check out the picture.
